I am a huge Douglas Coupland fan...so bear that in mind when reading this reviewlet!
The story of Hey Nostradamus! is about a high-school massacre in Canada in the year 1988. The first chapter concerns the story of a girl who is killed in the massacre, Cheryl Anway - it really is one of the most touching pieces of writing that I've read in a long time and I recommend that you don't read it in public! The rest of the book is a series of stories connected to her death, her boyfriend, his new girlfriend and his father.
What is amazing about this book is the varied perspective which each person has about the others - the book is set over 25 years, beginning with the shootings. All in all, an excellent read and one which handles its' subject with incredible tenderness and seeming deep insight.
Oh, and it has a really cool cover! :-)
